Homepage introducing the interactive custom retainer designer and highlighting more than 11,000 possible combinations.
Business Context
A regional dental laboratory wanted a better way for dentists and patients to design custom orthodontic retainers.
Traditionally, patients selected colors and patterns from printed catalogs and attempted to imagine what the finished appliance would look like. This often created uncertainty, additional conversations, and design revisions before manufacturing.
The goal was to create an engaging online experience that improved communication while strengthening relationships between the laboratory, dentists, and their patients.
Challenge
Every retainer consisted of multiple independently selectable design elements.
The application needed to allow users to:
- Select acrylic colors
- Apply decorative patterns
- Preview changes immediately
- Save completed designs
- Share designs with their dental provider
The challenge was creating a responsive visualization engine capable of producing thousands of realistic product variations from professionally photographed retainer components.
My Role
I designed and developed the complete web application from concept through deployment.
The solution included:
- Interactive product configurator
- Dynamic image composition
- Real-time design visualization
- User account functionality
- Community gallery
- Design persistence
- Patient-friendly user experience
- Website hosting and deployment
Rather than rendering graphics programmatically, the application dynamically layered professionally photographed retainer components to accurately represent the finished appliance as patients customized their selections.

The interactive design experience guided patients through selecting colors and patterns while instantly previewing the finished retainer.
Product Experience
The configurator guided users through a simple design workflow.
- Select a base acrylic color.
- Choose a decorative pattern.
- Instantly preview the customized retainer.
- Save or share the completed design with the dentist.
Patients could experiment freely before committing to a final design, making the customization process significantly more engaging than traditional printed catalogs.
The application ultimately supported more than 11,000 possible design combinations, giving patients extensive personalization options while simplifying communication with the dental laboratory.
Community Engagement
The platform extended beyond product customization by introducing a public gallery where users could showcase their creations.
Visitors could:
- Browse community-created retainers
- Draw inspiration from other designs
- Like and rate submissions
- Create and save their own custom designs
The gallery became an additional engagement tool, encouraging creativity while providing social proof for prospective customers.

The public gallery featured user-submitted retainer designs, encouraging creativity and helping future patients discover new design ideas.
Business Outcomes
The application fundamentally changed how patients interacted with the product.
Key outcomes included:
- Enabled interactive visualization of 11,000+ possible retainer designs
- Supported a gallery containing 1,000+ user-submitted designs
- Improved communication between patients, dentists, and the laboratory
- Increased patient confidence before manufacturing
- Reduced ambiguity during product selection
- Created a differentiated digital experience for referring dental practices
- Strengthened customer relationships through personalization and engagement
Consulting Insight
The project demonstrated that digital experiences create value when they help customers make confident decisions.
Rather than asking patients to imagine a finished product from static images, the configurator transformed product selection into an interactive, self-service design experience that encouraged exploration while improving communication across every participant in the process.
Executive Takeaway
Customers make better decisions when they can visualize the outcome.
By transforming a traditional product catalog into an interactive design platform capable of generating more than 11,000 unique configurations, the application improved customer engagement, strengthened business relationships, and demonstrated how thoughtful software design can create measurable business value without changing the underlying product itself.
Reflection
Although this began as an independent consulting engagement, it reinforced a lesson that has influenced every platform I’ve built since.
Technology is most valuable when it reduces uncertainty.
Whether enabling enterprise cloud transformations, modernizing software delivery, or helping a patient confidently design a custom orthodontic retainer, the objective is the same:
Build systems that help people make better decisions.
